چکیده

We consider shallow water flows through a channel with a contraction by experimental and theoretical means. The horizontal channel consists of a sluice gate and an upstream channel of constant width b0 ending in a linear contraction of minimum width bc. Experimentally, we observe upstream steady and moving bores/shocks, and oblique waves in the contraction, as single and multiple steady states, as well as a steady reservoir with a two-dimensional hydraulic jump in the contraction occurring in a small section of the bc/b0 and Froude number parameter plane. Inviscid one-dimensional hydraulic theory provides a comprehensive leading-order explanation, but quadratic friction is required to achieve quantitative agreement and stability.

Shape Optimization of an abrupt contraction using numerical streamlining

This research was conducted to find a reliable technique to shape an abrupt contraction for minimizing the energy loss. The method may find broader applications in design of variety of transitional cross-sections in hydraulic structures. The streamlines in a 2-D contraction were calculated through solving the potential flow equations in rectangular and curvilinear coordinates. The natural cubic...

Flow and Pressure Distributions in Short Heat Exchanger Cores with Abrupt Entrance and Exit

The typical installation of a heat exchange device usually involves a flow contraction at the core entrance and a flow expansion at the core exit. Repeated flow Contraction and expansion are experienced in the flow passages of some compact heat exchangers. The latter refers to the flow passages in the plate-fin type with louvered fins or stripped fins and in the tubular type with dimpled-circul...

Evaluation of Error Due to Applying Average Rating Curve as downstream Boundary Condition in Unsteady Flow Modeling

The rating curve is the relationship between the water stage and the associated discharge in a givensection of a channel. In steady flow, this relationship usually has exponential type, whereas inunsteady it flow has a looped shape. Since direct developing of actual looped rating curve by usinghydrometric methods is merely possible, steady-state rating curve is commonly used as a downstreamboun...

When should Doppler-determined valve area be better than the Gorlin formula?: Variation in hydraulic constants in low flow states.

In low flow states, underestimation errors occur when the Gorlin formula is used to calculate valve area. A model of valvular stenosis designed to examine changes in the hydraulic discharge coefficient (Cd) and coefficient of orifice contraction (Cc) may explain these errors. Unsteady flow was examined in a pulsatile pump model and in a dog model. Valve areas were calculated from pressure and f...
